The Federal Work-Study Program at Florida A&M University provides funds for part-time employment to help students finance the costs of postsecondary education. By participating in community service or campus-based roles related to their course of study, Rattlers gain valuable professional skills while fulfilling their financial needs. This initiative bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world execution, ensuring every student has the resources to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Students can obtain part‐time employment to assist in meeting their college costs and, if possible, gain work experience in a field related to their chosen profession.

Jobs may or may not require special skills.

Funds are based on FAFSA eligibility and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, as funds are limited.

This is a need-based work program offered to students enrolled full-time.

You must work to earn the money awarded and will receive payments bi-weekly.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) students at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University are considered university employees, subject to all FAMU HR policies, safety rules, and confidentiality agreements.

Key rules include a maximum of 20 hours of work per week, no scheduling during class times, mandatory department orientation, and adherence to the Student Code of Conduct.

Eligibility Requirements
Financial Need: Demonstrated financial need based on your current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Enrollment Status: Must be enrolled at in at least 6 credit hours.
Academic Progress: Maintenance of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards as defined by university policy.
Citizenship: U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status required for all federal aid programs.

Complete Your FAFSA
The first step to securing Federal Work-Study is submitting your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Ensure you select Florida A&M University (School Code: 001480) and indicate your interest in the work-study program.

Verify Eligibility & Search Jobs
Once your financial aid package is processed, check your FAFSA account to confirm eligibility. Eligible students can browse available departments below.

Apply to Hiring Departments
Identify the departments that align with your career goals. Contact the supervisor of the department you are interested in to confirm there are open positions. The supervisor of the department will provide a new-hire application and you will need to complete each document.

Onboarding & Authorization
Bring your completed new-hire paperwork, along with your driver's license and Social Security card, to the University's Human Resources department for processing and authorization. This department is available to notarize applications as well.

Who is eligible for the Federal Work Study (FWS) Program?
To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, be registered for at least 6 credit hours, have a current completed FAFSA application showing financial need, and be in good academic standing.
How much can I earn?
This is based on your cost-of-attendance funding.
Can I work as many hours as I want?
No, you can work up to 10 hours per week.
I applied for financial aid through FAFSA, but I didn’t get Work-Study. Why?
This determination is based on your financial need.
I have been awarded Work Study. When will I receive information to find my job?
Please visit your area of interest and speak with the representative to begin the process.
How can I apply?
Confirm that you are eligible (if confused call office of financial aid). Look through the list of departments to find one you are interested in. Go to new hire application link. Fill out the application. Bring the completed application to your chosen department, along with your ID and signed Social Security card.
You and your supervisor share responsibility for tracking your earnings.
Together, you will determine your schedule and number of work hours. Your assigned work-study award (allocation) represents the maximum amount you may earn each term. Students participating in work-study are not permitted to exceed this allocated amount. To stay within your limit, you must track your earnings by completing a work-study timesheet each pay period and submitting it to your supervisor. Your supervisor is responsible for verifying your reported earnings and ensuring you do not go over your allocation. If your earnings exceed the approved work-study amount, your contract will be canceled for the term.
No. A work-study job allows you to earn money to help cover your other college expenses, similar to a regular job. You will be paid biweekly through the university payroll system. However, you are still responsible for paying your own tuition, fees, housing, and any other expenses you incur.
To remain eligible, you must follow all student employment policies, terms, and conditions, maintain the required enrollment level for your award, and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
Keep in mind that work-study eligibility can change each semester. If you want to continue participating, you must reapply and submit a new FAFSA each academic year.
